Dumb People With Terrible Ideas

For this week’s review, I checked out Dumb People With Terrible Ideas, hosted by long-time radio personality Eric Gray. The show focuses on exactly what it promises, namely big-name people who are just awful. There are also bonus episodes that cover less-than well known people and those are fun too.

And the host Eric? Well, Eric doesn’t give a shit. Here’s a quote from the episode covering Kentucky’s famously stupid Junior Senator, “Rand Paul, a man who finds mayonnaise too spicey and pudding too hard to chew”, which I think tells you everything you need to know about how much Eric cares about pissing anyone off. (He later calls him Senator Head Pubes, which is just… chef’s kiss.)

Look, I’ll admit to this grain of salt. If I was a right-wing asshole, or someone who thought Nickelback was enjoyable listening tunes (yeah, he has an episode on them too), I’d hate this show. Like, truly frothing at the mouth HATE this show. Eric Gray is the personification of those “THIS IS THE WORLD LIBRERALS WANT” memes. He’s what would happen if Howard Stern hosted NPR or if your too-informed uncle was actually, you know, funny.

The show is, at times, sophomoric, but in a truly wonderful way. I want to find something wrong with it, but I simply can’t. The sound quality is perfect, and he uses just the right amount of background music, which is also fantastic as long as you think porn peaked in the 80s. And because Eric is a long-time radio host, his podcast voice is soothing and rich, like fine mahogany.

Is it a perfect podcast? No. Of course not. Nowhere close. But it’s rare that a podcast promises something and not only delivers, but leaps far past your expectations.

Ok one more way he described Rand Paul, “He looks like the elf on the shelf if the elf on the shelf was an asshole.”

Thank you, Eric Gray. Now go forth and prosper.

I give it a 9.75 out of 10!
